I don't see why we have to change things in the first place.

It's not something that actually compiles, and the current methods work
fine. This is for debian standard or so? Netscape's directory heirarchy
is almost exact to that of OpenVerse, installing in /usr/lib or
/usr/local/lib, depending on where you want to install it.

Things such as Gnome break very easily when installed in the same place as
many other apps, and thus can be made to all be put in /opt/gnome, for
example.. I think though that for binaries of OpenVerse to be in
/opt/openverse/bin or something is unneeded.

Majordomo is another example of software that, does not install in bin,
lib, etc. directories, but in its own, and is written in an interpreted
language, very much like OpenVerse is.

/usr is where system files go, and /usr/local is where local files go.

In the history of Unix, /usr was usually shared among systems, while
/usr/local was on the local machine, and where software was actually
installed on that machine.

Nowadays /usr is used for parts of the OS, while /usr/local is for
programs that are not part of the OS, like ircII-epic4, Netscape, and
other things.

/opt (to clear any possible confusion I added) is meant for specific
software packages.. like /opt/netscape, /opt/oss, /opt/gnome, or what
not..
