Yesterday I noticed the 1for1 banner had a picture of a very scantilly
clad lady and 6 links: "Free Pict #1", "Free Pict #2", ...

I'm so desensitized to banner adds throwing garbage at me all the time
(like all the X10 adds everywhere), I didn't pay much attention to it at
the time.

I think it is best to dump these banner adds anyway.  The open source
community has much better ways of communicating than this.  If people find
your site, let it be by word of mouth, freshmeat, or mailing lists.  If
they decide to actually download and use OV, it will be based on the
appearance and content of the web page, so I wouldn't water it down with
banners.  For most people, the web page is the first and only impression
they will have of the project and will be what they base their decision on
whether to download it on.  If the web page has a bunch of banner
adds (especially for pornographic sites!), typos, etc. or is not
visually appealing, it will reflect poorly on the software.
