Dear Community Member,
Communities.com is going through some exciting changes and we want to
make you aware of them. Near the end of September, we will be announcing
a completely new server/client visual chat application (not yet named).
The new product works as a plug-in for your browser.
“Don’t you already have a browser version of The Palace?” Yes, but we
have found that it does not perform as well as hoped. We have
engineered our new product from the ground up, keeping in mind the
lessons we learned from previous versions as well as the feedback we
received from you.
“Why not just fix the current clients?” Essentially, there is no way to
practically fix the problems (such as cloning, banjumping, etc), that
plague the current versions of our products. The Internet has come a
long way in the past five years, and The Palace has reached the point at
which it can no longer evolve.
Here are just some of the new features:
Secure Identities – Rest assured the person you’re talking to is who you
think it is!
Object Economies – It’s not just props anymore! It’s accessories,
badges, trading cards and more!
Secure Trading – Trade objects using our secure trading mechanism.
Multimedia-rich Environments – It’s cool, it’s fun, it’s dynamic!
Buddy Lists – Know when your friends are online, and where they are!
Instant Messaging – Send messages to your friends across worlds!
Discussion Boards – Easy to use, integrated discussion boards with
secure identities!
Small, One-time Download – As easy to install as Flash!
It’s Fast – As quick to load as a web page, and no sluggish Java client!
Windows and Macintosh Support – Written in C and compiled for both
Windows and Mac!
Heading into the future, our focus is on our new product and building a
user base for it. As such, we will stop taking The Palace registrations
on or near September 27th. This includes The Palace Server
registrations. The Palace Server Software and Palace User Software will
not be available after the 27th. Upgrades to Palace Server registration
codes will no longer be available.
“What about my Palace?” YOUR PALACE SERVERS AND CLIENTS WILL CONTINUE
TO FUNCTION NORMALLY. Customers can visit your Palace servers and you
can visit any available Palace server. Communities.com’s owned and
operated Palace Sites (Mansion, Welcome, Portal, Practice and Avatar)
will continue to operate as normal through the end of the year.
Additionally, we will maintain support for current Palace Server
operators and their customers through at least the end of the year.
“Can I convert my Palace Server to the new product?” We are launching
with a new technology, and as such the new product is not compatible
with The Palace, and there are no personal servers planned for launch.
However, Communities.com will continue to provide limited support for
current users to the end of the year. This includes the directory
listing of Palace Sites. The Channels and Featured Programs will be
discontinued at the end of September, and no additions will be made
between now and then. The Communities.com web site will be re-launched
and will focus on the new product.
We hope our new product’s features and fun places will entice you to try
it out. In fact, to show our appreciation, we will have some special
offers for you. Be sure to check your e-mail for our Newsletter and
other announcements for registered users.
As with all schedules, our launch schedule is subject to change. If it
does change, we will inform you
via the lists. If you have any questions, please contact us at
custserv@thepalace.com. We will gather your questions and feedback and
respond to the lists with answers and clarifications.
Sincerely,
Jeffery “Vaz” Douglas
Director of Communities and Support
