Re: [OpenVerse] BUGS/TODO

You are welcomed to create an authentication system and nickname registration
system. I'll even post it on the web site. But I won't be implementing it on the
servers which I admin. Just how I feel, when you're not logged on your name is
available to anyone. It's part of the reason we have whois information so that
users hostnames can be matched to usernames so their "friends" can know it's
really the right person.

User authentication per server is a grand idea for private places. I would
welcome code for this. Wouldn't activate it but would welcome it. It's not a
priority for me so I won't be coding it any time soon.

NickName registration would work poorly in OpenVerse anyway because OpenVerse is
not centralized at all - Even IRC has central hubs which all servers must
connect through so nickname registration can work on a chat program like that.
Our design simply does not lend to nickname registration for the entire
OpenVerse community and any attempt to create networks of openverse servers will
take away from the many advantages of a de-centralized network.

On this subject ....
...place on back back back burner and let simmer...

Might I suggest a password authentication system much like what IRC has to
offer so that handles are retainable?

It would be definitely a problem if there were more than one !!Rob!! (with a
brown cat icon). I recall I had a problem on a chat system many many years
ago. Someone stole my Nick and spread roumers on my behalf. When I found
out I hit the roof, and I vowed for this not to happen again. This was a
demonstration of how others can take advantage and "misuse" anothers' handle
and generate ill feelings. Hence, passwords and authentication systems
should be initiated OR a policy of non duplication should remain in place
and work on the real issue of disconnections.

maybe shorten the timeout-ghosting time so that a user is able to get back
in sooner.... as the number of users increase, so will the number of
accidental "carrier drops/disconnections", so the refresh timimg should be
revisited and shortened.
